FIRST LEGO League

Ages 9-14; Grades 4-8

Friendly competition is at the heart of Challenge, as teams of students ages 9-14 engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering – building and programming a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game. As part of Challenge, teams also participate in a research project to identify and solve a relevant real-world problem.

?What is FIRST LEGO League: Challenge

FIRST® LEGO® League promotes friendly-competition and prepares students to become future leaders with the skills necessary to enter the workforce. Research, communication, problem solving, teamwork, time management, coding, and engineering are just the beginning of the skills learned through this program.

Each year, teams are tasked with solving a real-world problem - the Innovation Project - and designing, building, and programming a LEGO robot to complete missions for a robot game.

For the Innovation Project, students research existing solutions, consult experts, and present in front of judges at an event. Previous challenges have included recycling, hydrodynamics, long-term space travel, and public buildings and spaces.

As the theme changes, so does the robot game. Students code a LEGO robot using Scratch, LEGO MINDSTORMS, and/or Python, to complete as many missions as possible within a 2.5-minute time frame.

Teams are encouraged to mentor one another, share and learn skills from one another, and connect with their local and global community. The FIRST Core Values are the cornerstones of the program, distinguishing FIRST LEGO League from other programs of its kind. By embracing the Core Values, participants learn that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork.

Students Will:

  • Build, Design, and Program a LEGO robot
  • Solve a real-world problem by conducting research, consulting experts, and developing an engaging presentation
  • Demonstrate FIRST Core Values of Discovery, Innovation, Inclusion, Impact, Teamwork, and Fun in and out of FIRST LEGO League
  • Develop holistic skills including time management, collaboration, self-efficacy, confidence, and more

Ready for the next level?

If your student is in the age range of 12-18, FIRST Tech Challenge may be the right program for them! Teams (up to 15 team members, grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Teams design and build robots, raise funds, design and market their team brand, and do community outreach to earn specific awards. Participants are eligible to apply for $80M+ in college scholarships.
