Creating a Team Identity

Why should teams create an identity?

Creating a team identity can help your team leave a lasting impression on judges, market to sponsors, and more.

Check out a presentation by FRC Team 1902 Exploding Bacon on the Big Bacon Theory of Image & Marketing to learn ways you can create a team identity, develop unique swag, design fun pits for competition, etc.

Brainstorm unique team names that represent who the team is. Core Value Judges love hearing the stories about how a team got their name. This is a great exercise to help introduce the Core Values and get the team to start working together to develop strategies and decision processes. My team all loved the word Mega. They brainstormed a second word that would symbolize who they are, and Mavericks fit perfectly. Mega Nachos was on the table at one point!

Once you have a name it is fun to create a logo. It doesn’t need to be complicated, a fancy font or clipart, a great job for talented artists. For example, Nuclear Bananas had a banana as their logo. The logo is then great to use as branding and making t-shirts, buttons, and banners. The EK9 Space Launchers last season took their robot logo and made tiny 3D printed models to give as favors.

After that, using the team name to create a theme to further develop a clear identity can be a lot of fun. Rockin’ Around the League has 50's themed costumes and the Technical Trojan’s Green Team wears green tutus. The theme can also help with ideas for decorating the pit.

Facebook pages, blogs, websites, etc. are a great way for teams to share their
FIRST LEGO League journey and share their enthusiasm for the program with the world. The Electro-Lions used their Facebook presence to not just share their season journey to Arkansas but also to fundraise.
