FIRST® LEGO® League

About the Program
Grades 4-8; ages 9-14
FIRST LEGO League provides students with the chance to research a real-world challenge, then innovate and develop their own solution through designing, building, and coding LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robots to perform autonomous “missions” on a playing field.
FIRST LEGO League teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and through the process learn to make positive contributions to society.
Start a Team
If you are interested in a FIRST LEGO League team, please contact your local school to see if they have a team already established. If they do not, consider starting one yourself!
FIRST LEGO League teams consist of children ages 6 to 10. Teams should have a minimum of 2 students and no more than 10.
Once a team has been identified in order to participate in FIRST LEGO League the coach or team representative must register with FIRST.
Registration through FIRST is open now. Registration for the CITY SHAPERSM season will close at the end of October.
FIRST LEGO League teams will receive:
- An official team number
- Challenge Set (Mat and LEGO Mission Models)
- Team Meeting Guide
- 10 Engineering Notebooks
Teams can also elect to purchase their robot set at a discounted rate from FIRST. Robots are reused annually, but a new theme Challenge Set is released each season with the annual challenge.
FAQ
The average cost for a FIRST LEGO League team is $1,200 - $1,800 for a first-year team. Team sizes range between 2 -10 young people.
More information regarding cost can be found in our 2019 Season Handbook.
The easiest way to join a younger program is to start your own team. For the older programs please check with your school to see if they have a team. Talk with your school principal. If your school does not have a team, encourage your principal to identify a teacher who would be willing to start a team and let them know that you would be willing to volunteer. Please let your principal know that FIRST is a collaborative partnership with private industry professionals and educators to inspire young people towards STEM.
FIRST LEGO League begins in August and, depending on advancement, ends in late February.
