FIRST® LEGO® League Jr.

About the Program

Grades K-4; ages 6-10
Through exploratory research, hands-on construction, teamwork, and imagination, FIRST LEGO League Jr. challenges teams of up to six children to explore a scientific concept, then build a model and code it to make it move using LEGO Education WeDo 2.0. Teams also document their work in an Engineering Notebook and share their journey through a team Show Me Poster. Throughout their experience, teams operate under the FIRST Core Values, celebrating discovery, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism®.

Start a Team

If you are interested in a FIRST LEGO League Jr. team, please contact your local school to see if they have a team already established. If they do not, consider starting one yourself! FIRST LEGO League Jr. teams consist of children ages 6 to 10. Teams should have a minimum of 2 students and no more than 6. A core component of the program is teamwork and problem-solving.
Teams can be organized in many different ways, including:

  • After school programs
  • Boys & Girls Clubs, Girl and Boys Scouts, 4H, FFA, neighborhood organizations
  • Homeschool parents
  • Church youth groups
  • In classroom teams as part of science curriculum

Once a team has been identified to participate in FIRST LEGO League Jr. the coach or team representative must register with FIRST nationally, then plan to participate in a local Expo. Expos are non-competitive and are meant to be a celebration of each team's work. Once the FIRST registration is complete the team coach or representative must register with Renaissance Jax. Expo events are detailed on the FIRST LEGO League tournament schedule page, which is available here.

FAQ

The easiest way to join a younger program is to start your own team. For the older programs please check with your school to see if they have a team. Talk with your school principal. If your school does not have a team, encourage your principal to identify a teacher who would be willing to start a team and let them know that you would be willing to volunteer. Please let your principal know that FIRST is a collaborative partnership with private industry professionals and educators to inspire young people towards STEM.
On average the team size is between 3 - 6 young people.
The FIRST LEGO League Jr. season is between 6 - 12 weeks. Expos take place December through February.
Parents, teachers, 4-H and/or scout leaders, etc. have all found the experience of coaching these young people rewarding as they guide and inspire their FIRST LEGO League Jr. teams.
